Now that all galleries, museums and cultural centers are closed, the only option left to see art and discuss with artists in to do it online.

And now that we have to stay home, from Johannesburg to Jinzhou, from Calabar to California, from Malaca to Malama, all of us with internet connections can now get together and beat the blues of the social isolation by getting online, and logging on to the Facebook profile of the University of African Art, and participate in the weekly Face-to-Facebook Art Talk that I, Moyo Okediji, host.

When I arrived the United States in 1992 to start a doctorate at UW, Madison, I had only $98 in my pocket.

My professor, Henry Drewal, quickly came to my assistance. He immediately paid my school fees for the first semester, and gave me $1,000 in cash to start me off. Then he provided me with free accommodation in the posh part of town for the first year of my studies, while I found my feet.

“Iya Oyo,” I called, after polishing the bowl of amala she made for me, “what does Yèyé mean? Is it different from Ìyá, which means mother?”

It was Baba Oyo who answered me, raising his glasses and looking up from a book without a cover that he was reading. Because I had also read that book on his table, I knew the book was titled “Ogboju Ode Ninu Igbo Irunlole,” by D.O. Fagunwa, one of the old books he had in his library.

This morning, a friend of mine who is a professor at a university here in Texas woke me up with, “Hey Moyo, what is the meaning of Yoruba?”

This professor called me on WhatsApp video.

Disinformation is as old as the human tongue.

Let me take that back.

Disinformation predates the human tongue.

Disinformation started with the body language of making signs.

When you smile, when you really are plotting to hit a fellow, that is disinformation.

Unlike the simple way we number our calendar daily, the Romans numbered theirs in groups or blocks of days that are a little more complicated for our simple modern system.

There are three blocks of days in the month in the Roman calendar.

The first block is the Nones, which ends on the 12th or 13th day of most months.

The second block is the Ides, which ends on the 22nd day of most months.

The third block is the Kalends, which ends on the Ist day of most months.

They took Obaseki to a native doctor in Benin, straight from the police cell.

I ran into him about six months later when he was released.

His condition had deteriorated remarkably. He looked gaunt and shrunk. He must have lost about fifty pounds, (and he weighed not less than 175lbs and stood at 6’ tall when he assaulted Steve). His face had dark blotches and rashes all over it, and he moved with a stoop that made him look much shorter, as he gingerly carried his tray of food from the counter to a table.

I knew that he saw me as I entered the Ekewan campus cafeteria. But he quickly averted his face, pretending that he didn’t notice me. I went to the food counter to place my order. I decided I would surprise him by joining him at his table once I got my food.
