Suffer-Suffer For World

My annual (NOT monthly) salary as a Senior Lecturer at the Obafemi Awolowo University in 1992 (right before I left for the United States) was N9,600.

It’s not a typo. N9,600 only, for the entire year.

How does the university expect to keep the brightest and the best if you don’t pay them up to living wages?

Kí Olódùmarè má fi ebi òwúrọ̀ pa wá o. (May Olodumare not pepper us with hunger in the morning).

Torí òwúrọ̀ ni ó ń sọ bí alẹ́ ti má a rí. (The morning is a forecast of the evening weather).

Ojú tó fi òwúrọ̀ ṣepin, kì í bá ni dalẹ́. (The eye that produces putrid pus in the morning may not last till evening time).

With Adetola Wewe, my friend visiting from Nigeria, I went on a boat ride.

A friend, who is also a devout, church-going Christian just talked with me a few minutes ago. He called from Nigeria.

“What is wrong with these kids?” he asked me. “Why can’t they protest peacefully? What has their quarrel against police brutality got to do with burning down buildings, and looting stores? They are criminals. They are worse than the politicians they are criticizing. If you place them in positions of power, they would do worse.”

I didn’t respond. After all, I didn’t call him. He called. He must have something really important to say to have spent his money calling me.

Title: The French Medussa

In 1810, the French government launched a bad-ass naval frigate, the Méduse, rigged with 40 guns. The Méduse participated in the Napoleonic wars, and also dabble in marine raids off the coasts of the Caribbean, before departing in 1816 for Senegal on its ill-fated trip for which it became notorious.
