These are some of the artists at the Akodi Orisa, Ile Ife, Nigeria, taking a minute off for a photoshoot. They paint, sculpt, do installation works, perform and design in several mediums.

They are a garrison of creative spirits, using art to express the joy and struggles of being Nigerian.

They are awe-inspiring pioneers.

They have gone through thick and thin in a country in which women must work twice as hard to have a voice.

Yet they come out swinging, smiling and tireless, ready to take on any curve ball life throws at them.

They are working mothers, wives and fighters who inspire me to do my best in whatever circumstances I find myself.

I salute their passion for creativity and celebrate their zeal for life.

Let me introduce you to Jẹgúdújẹrá, (Chop-and-quench).

Do you know how the Jẹgúdújẹrá Nigerian eats chicken thigh?

I will tell you:

Set the plate of chicken thigh in front of Jẹgúdújẹrá, and the eyes bulge, opening as wide as possible.

A wide smile distorts Jẹgúdújẹrá’s face into a demonic mask of inner delight.

Jẹgúdújẹrá starts with the flesh. With studied concentration, Jẹgúdújẹrá bites deep into the flesh until the entire mouth is full, with both cheeks bulging.
