My friend called me from Dallas last night and asked “Are you watching the trial of Derek Chauvin?”

I said no.

She continued, saying, “One must be careful not to spend too much time listening to the ongoing trial of the former police officer accused of murdering George Floyd, or you will become an expert in forensic pathology.”

“I don’t stand that risk,” I said.

“Unfortunately,” she replied, “I am becoming an expert in forensic pathology.”

When Steve offered us a cigarette, I took one out of the pack he extended.

It was from one of the packs he brought from Britain a couple of months earlier.

I was not good with cigarettes. But I was also not good at saying no to cigarette offers. All my friends smoked. And I loved to hold a stick of cigarette stylishly and watch the smoke rise from the tip of the ashes.

We sat there in the dark, watching the moon, smoking, silent. Suddenly, a bolt of lightning crashed across the sky, followed by a ripping sound of thunder. Instantly, the moon and the stars disappeared, and the sky was an endless black canvas coughing out intermittent flashes of jagged lights filled with throbs of thunder.

Iya Oyo took a slow and long drag on her pipe, and released the smoke in short puffing sounds.The moon was orange bright, a perfect golden disk floating on the clouds.Some insects, hiding behind the darkness, sang in harmony with the frogs serenading the stars from the pond next to the Orisa house.It was the perfect time for me to ask my question: nobody was saying anything.

Exactly one year ago, I made the following statement about the impending presidential election, President Buhari and the state of the Nigerian nation.

The presidential election in Nigeria is postponed for another week.

Who will win between Buhari and Atiku?

(In all seriousness, all other names are not on the ballot).

The question is not whether Buhari will be reelected into office as the president of Nigeria.

Less than 1000 people are holding the entire country of Nigeria to ransom.

Less than 1000 people are holding the entire country of Nigeria to ransom.

And they are all blind and deaf.

They are practically no more than 1000 people destroying the lives of two hundred million people.

These blind and deaf people include governors, senators, national assembly members and other appointed officials who have turned the national treasury into their mothers’ pot of stew.
