You Are Our Sunshine
If your skin is dark, we praise you as Adúmáradán.
If your skin is light, we hail you as Apọ́nbéporẹ́.
If you are thin, we salute you as Ọ̀pẹ́lẹ́ńgẹ́.
Look to your weakness, because therein lies your strength.
Where you are strongest is where you are weakness.
Focus not on your achievements

The painting celebrates Robert Hayden’s poem, “Middle Passage.”

that there was one they called The Guinea Rose
and they cast lots and fought to lie with her: ”
The character across the floor of the ship being whipped to consent is the lady called Guinea Rose in the poem.
