Work in progress for a painting titled GOLD COIN..
Artist: Iyaba Ibo Mandingo
Portrait of Moyo Okediji
He makes my head egglike; the portrait looks like a profile made from an ancient coin.
I love you Iyaba!!!!
I went into my garage and found a harvest of forgotten canvases waiting for me.
This corona break has given me some time to look at what I already have produced.
This is the last painting I did in 1992, just before leaving Nigeria.
You will notice that it is made from gouache.
Title: Yemoja Protecting her Children (Earth Day).
Medium: acrylic on canvas
Size: 76″ x 64″
Date: April 2021
Yemoja, Oya, and Osun are female divinities whose duties include protecting the earth, cleansing it and engineering regeneration.
I’m a refugee
An exile, a stranger
In a gold residence.
Home died decades away.
Those who opened their door
To welcome my wandering legs
Point to me their tables
decked with wine and sweetbread.
The presidential election in Nigeria is postponed for another week.
Who will win between Buhari and Atiku?
(In all seriousness, all other names are not on the ballot).
The question is not whether Buhari will be reelected into office as the president of Nigeria.
Ifa says Buhari will be reelected, whether you like it or not.
YORUBA DISINFORMATION IS MUNGO PARK
This morning, a friend of mine who is a professor at a university here in Texas woke me up with, “Hey Moyo, what is the meaning of Yoruba?”
This professor called me on WhatsApp video.
Disinformation is as old as the human tongue.
Let me take that back.
Disinformation predates the human tongue.
Disinformation started with the body language of making signs.
When you smile, when you really are plotting to hit a fellow, that is disinformation.
