Homesick.

Homesick.

I will close my eyes and transport myself back home, among my friends, drinking palm wine laced with stout, or whatever. Khaki. Or whatsoever friends gift our ancestors.

Àjò ò dùn bí ilé.

It is Thanksgiving week in the United States when people are giving thanks to their ancestors.

But my ancestors are in Nigeria, not America.

I don’t care for the turkey dinner they have for their Thanksgiving here. I prefer akara and palm wine to give thanks to our ancestors.

To my ancestors, I pour libations of palm wine. And I give thanks that all is very well.

On my 64th birthday anniversary, I celebrate my mother, the one person most responsible for who I am today.

She does not even know the date of her birth.

But she keeps mine so close to heart.

My father, Oladejo Okediji, is the known one. He is the famous author, who wrote novels, plays, poems, and essays. When he passed last year at 90, nobody even mentioned my mother once, as they poured deserved eulogies on him.

The first woman president in Africa, President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia, visited my class yesterday to talk to students taking my DIASPORA VISIONS course.

A Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient, and one of Forbes 100 Most Powerful Women in the world, President Sirleaf was a delight to spend time with.

Rufus froze when he saw Obaseki moving towards our table. His jawline tightened. The grotesque was unmasking. I understood the meaning of that facial reaction. When a cobra flattens its head and its neck while lifting up its body off the ground to the torso level, even a baby knows what that means. We had crossed the red zone. I immediately got up and picked up the tumbler in front of him before it became a scud missile. My movement also distracted him for a moment. This was the climactic moment that had been building up for a year.
